Chronicles of the Nolen's in Vietnam '08 Part 1

Our adventure to Vietnam started when we left for the airport Saturday, September 13th, 2008 around 2:30pm. Our flight out of Minneapolis to LA was leaving around 5pm. We arrived in LA at 7pm (9pm MSP time) only to find out that a typhoon had hit Vietnam earlier and that our flight from LA to Taipei was cancelled. This was actually found out about 4 hrs later, after the EVA airlines desk opened up. It was almost 11pm, we had eaten a nice dinner, Parker was being a trooper and we were about to find out what our options were!

...Just so you guys know, Parker was our golden ticket on this trip...the crowds and workers parted the water to see this precious blonde hair, blue-eyed wonder! Because we had the only infant on the international flight, they moved us to the front of the line (even in front of the Executive Business Class) to get us taken care of. By midnight, poor Parker was sleepy and getting a little irritated; he fell asleep just before everything was finalized at the airport. EVA airlines was putting everyone up in a hotel for the night and we were scheduled to fly out the next day (Sunday). The service from EVA air was incredible; they walked us to the bus that was going to take us to the hotel, gave us food vouchers, and made sure that we knew our times and details for the next day. We arrived at the Radisson around 12:30am and were passed out in the bed by 1:15am. Up at 6am for a big delicious breakfast...their buffet spread was amazing! There were over 40 different breakfast choices on their buffet! Fruits, keishes, meats, cereals, hot dishes, bagels, croissants, muffins, pancakes, donuts...the list was never-ending! We really enjoyed that part of our day! :)

Grabbed the 8:20am bus to the airport so that we could check in and be ready for our 11:15am flight. The 11:15 flight was delayed for a few hrs so we had plenty of time to sit in that airport. :) Did I mention that in LA he did several photo shoots with some of the Taiwan ladies. They all wanted to have their picture made with him! It was really funny! Of course, Parker just smiled at them and gave them his killer laugh that just bowled them over! He really was great though...never fussed when someone got up in his face or played with his feet. The flight to Taipai left around 2:30 that afternoon...13hrs later we were in Taipei. It was a great flight and went by fairly quickly.

We had bulk head seats so that Parker could lay in the little bin and sleep right in front of us and we had Economy Plus seats (I would definitely recommend this as the way to go!!!); these seats are basically the same as Business Class, you just get the economy food. Anyway, Parker only cried one time on the flight for about 5 min; the rest of the time he looked around at everybody, played with some fun gadgets and toys, slept and ate. It was grand!

This was what our bulk-head seats looked like...Parker's little bassinet went up on the wall in front of our seats. For those of you who have children under the age of 1, the "baby carrier seats" were about half the price of our adult tickets. Check with the airline though to see the age & weight limit of this option. At 8 mos. Parker had almost met the length & weight maximums for Eva Air.

One thing we will do differently next time: We didn't think about the dye's from the fabric/blankets upsetting Parker's delicate skin. You'll notice on almost all the pictures from the trip that Parker's cheeks look flushed & his skin isn't baby smooth clear. It was from the detergent the airlines use..very strong stuff! It took awhile for his complexion to clear up just from the 2 days of traveling!

On each of the international flights, they give out these sweet little baby kits for the infants. Included is a diaper, wipes, some juice & a little book!

When we arrived in Taipai I was in awe over how nice the airport was and how sweet the Taiwan people were. It was the cleanest airport I have ever been to. And once again, those Asians parted the way for sweet Parker.

Obviously, we had missed our connecting flight from Taipei to Ho Chi Minh since our original flight had been cancelled, but we were taking it one flight at a time.

When we arrived in Taiwan, there was someone standing at the gate waiting on the people going to Ho Chi Minh; she directed us which way to go to get reassigned on a flight. Once again, the people issued us to the front of the line and they put us on a flight leaving for Hong Kong in a half an hour from that time. So, we immediately headed for our gate (no tea or postcards for me this time!) and got on the 2 hour flight. Parker did great once again...much smaller seats but still nice. The two hours went by fast which was good because we were getting sleepy!

At Hong Kong they lost our "gate check" stroller (they didn't know whether or not it had gotten on the last flight.) I wasn't too happy about that. Nana and Poppie had bought us this stroller from Sky Mall (the catalogs in the airplanes) that you could use in airports and as a car seat in cars and airplanes. It's the next best thing since disposable diapers (for people who travel a lot anyway)!! Everyone gets a kick out of it because it's definitely the cadillac style of strollers. So as you can see, I was sad when I thought it was gone forever!

Anyway, we boarded a flight to Ho Chi Minh with the help of some of the customer service representatives. We would not have made the flight had it not been for their help...they actually held the flight for us, helped us carry our bags to the airplane and pushed us to the front of security. The people in Hong Kong weren't as friendly as the people in Taiwan but VERY efficient...I was impressed. By the time we sat down in the airplane headed to Ho chi Minh we were exhausted. All 3 of us passed out in our seats; it was dark outside...I don't even know what time...but we all slept for the 2 hr flight.

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City at 10pm (Vietnam time)...did the Visa's, passports (all of which took about an hr)...then went down to get our luggage. No luggage and no stroller. After talking to one of the Lost Baggage people for about an hr we walked outside to be picked up by Poppie and his driver, Mr. Nam. Mr. Nam handed me a beautiful assortment of flowers to welcome me to his city...so sweet. We headed for the Nolen's house tired but very excited..it was around midnight their time. Everyone slept well that night...

Tuesday, Nana and Poppie had to go to work so Clay and Parker and I hung out at the house and rested until about 3:30. Then we picked up Nana from school and went shopping! That was fun! We looked at coats and jewelry! I walked in this nice little Vietnamese store and was custom fitted for 3 coats in under 15 minutes!!!! Tuesday night our bags and STROLLER were delivered! Yes! ...I was up all night with Parker...that boy was wide awake ready to play! I was one tired mama the next morning. Once again, Clay, Parker and I just hung out at the house...I was out of it...until time to pick up Nana. Mrs. Nga fixed us a delicious lunch...fresh fruits of all sorts and a turkey, cucumber and tomato sandwich.

One of the first realizations how people drive in Vietnam...everywhere & very close to each other! So glad Mr. Nam knew what he was doing! :)

Shopping for coats & such...my favorite dress shop that we visited. They custom fit items in the store for you as well as offer you nice custom-made suits, shirts, coats, etc. for reasonable prices.

Wednesday, relaxing morning...Clay & I went to the spa for a back massage...ahhhhh... Parker stayed with Mrs. Nga....Parker LOVED Mrs. Nga! We picked up Nana from school, went to the Saigon Market to see what fun things they had and then went back home for a delicious supper prepared by Mrs. Nga.

What we saw everyday on the way to get Nana from school. Busy, busy place! Mostly motorcycles...some vehicles. I always laughed because we would joke how if we rolled our window down & turned our head towards the outside, we'd be kissing the person next to us we were so close!

Saigon Square Market was quite an experience. This was the first Market in Ho Chi Minh that we visited. To sum it up in one word: CRAZY! The place goes on & on & on...multiple floors, around-the-next corners that are never-ending, every kind of product imaginable you can get here (except for a lot of foods...there was another market for this!)

I was amazed watching the motorcycles come & go from where we were standing at the entrance of Saigon Market.

Mrs. Nga spoiled us so...every meal time was prepared for us lovingly & was absolutely scrumptious. She knew how to make it so special for us too...just by the little things she added to each meal! One of the things I miss the most is the fresh fruit that she prepared for us each day!

Early to bed Wednesday night.

Thursday: Parker woke up at 3:30am and Clay and I woke up wide awake with him. We went swimming in the Nolen's pool around 7am and then I got ready for my hair appt at YKC. I was soooo excited to get my haircut! Arrived at the salon and they handed me a cup of hot tea and started their magic. They dry cut my hair then washed it with a special treatment, put me under a dryer for a steam treatment and started to give me a deep tissue massage! Forget the magazine that I brought with me to read while I waited!!!! After 20 minutes, they rinsed my hair and proceeded to massage my head for another 20 minutes. Incredible! After rinsing and fixing my hair, Ky came back over to do a last check on things and then put this smoother on my hair.... Anyway, LOVED the time at the salon. We then met Poppie for lunch at a local Vietnamese restaurant; so good! Showed Parker off at Poppie's office, picked up Nana from school, enjoyed tea and dessert at the Caravelle hotel (gorgeous place) and home for dinner. Early to bed...so tired...Parker slept through the night.

Ky can work some magic, let me tell ya'! He was also very fun to talk to; he & his wife just recently had their first baby! (I tried convincing him that MN was THE place to be & that if he moved, I would bring him a LOT of business! It didn't work though!) :)

This was what I did everytime I stepped into the salon...was handed a menu & chose a warm tea...so delicious....one of my favorite simple indulgences on the trip! The drinks were a courtesy to each of the clients during their services

While we finished up eating, one of the waiters asked if he could hold Parker & walk him around the restaurant. We agreed & within minutes, Parker was konked out in his arms. So sweet...

Parker loved riding in our car in Vietnam... He didn't have to sit in his carseat & could see everything that we could see!

This sweet blue outfit & bib came from Vietnam. Clay & I love dressing him in these short & cool onesies! It was perfect for the warm weather there! One problem: the Vietnamese kept thinking he was a girl because they only dress their girls in cute outfits such as this. Boys do not wear anything this nice.

After picking up Nana from school, we enjoyed tea at the Caravelle hotel in downtown Ho Chi Minh..ahhhh, the sweet taste of pure luxury. When you step foot in this hotel, you feel like a million bucks. I would highly suggest adding this place to one of your spots to visit if you ever go to Ho Chi Minh. Tea time here is spectacular & it offers a great view of the downtown area if you can manage getting a window seat!

The dessert menu goes on forever & offers a variety of sweets & pastries.

Note: Many of my pictures were slightly blurry from the trip because most were taken from a moving vehicle...you don't stop leisurely on the side of the road here...believe you me, I asked! So, just in case you wondered, now you know! :)

This time last year...

This time last year, Clay, Parker & I were just arriving in Vietnam to visit Nana & Poppie (Clay's parents) for two weeks. Since I didn't have the blog established, I thought it would be fun to do a recap of our adventures abroad.

As of last week, I have just finished printing all of the pictures from the trip! ha ha! And yes, I have been printing continuously every other month or so since we returned. The albums (yes, that is plural) are almost complete as they have been an on-going process as well. I will share those later too!

So, over the next few days, check back for the Chronicles of the Nolen's in Vietnam!

Additional random note added later: Have any old 35 mm film lying around? Walgreens today only will develop one free roll for you with the coupon that's in their mailer (you can get one at the store...not sure if this is for all the Walgreens or just some). I've had a roll on our desk for several years now :) that I kept forgetting to develop. It was fun to take it in today & see what the pictures were from. It was a roll from our Honeymoon in 2006 to the Bahamas! How fun! Can't wait to show these to Clay when he gets home! He'll get a kick out of them!

let the world rejoice...carrie has a new camera!! :)

I have a camera!!! This past weekend, Clay went and got me one! Thank you baby! (I think he was a little tired of me whining about moments missed...Me to Clay: "I wish you could have seen what Parker did this afternoon. It was so cool! Unfortunately, I didn't have any way to capture it & show it to you..." :) No, but I think he's actually excited for us to have one too! He asked me yesterday why I hadn't taken more pics with it! (we had been to the bank, Target & the gym! My man is sooooo learning!) ha ha! You gotta love it! I can't wait to show lots of fun, new pictures soon!
Here's one just in case you've missed seeing him these last 3 days!! (His eyes are closed, but I love his expression in this one...classic Parker smile as he's trying to run off before mom can get the picture!)

18 month pics & what he is enjoying now at 20 mos!

We recently got back Parker's 18 month pictures that I have been meaning to post...hope you enjoy! These were some of our favorites!

Yesterday, Parker turned 20 months! We took a special walk to the nearby park...it took us almost 40 minutes to get there & about 30 minutes to walk back to the apartment, so the actual time at the park was cut short by a little bit. :) When you are stopping to sit down on the sidewalk every 4 steps to play with a ladybugs and/or rocks, naturally it would take a wee bit longer to make the journey to the playground!! We had such a fun & relaxing time though; on the way home we walked a different way so that we could stop & watch the ducks in the nearby pond. Parker got a kick out of watching them bob their tails up & down in the water as they looked for food!

These last several weeks, I have felt an overwhelming amount of love towards our precious son. He amazes and inspires me every day. Parker keeps Clay & me in stitches from the constant laughter he provides...and oh, the sweet, adorable, innocent (and not-so-innocent!) looks...how can you not turn your head to keep from smiling.

Parker is continuing to learn new words (especially since we aren't using our "Na Nu," aka the paci, quite as much!) and basically comprehends everything that we seem to tell him or ask him to do. We are thankful that he is the champion eater that he is...he eats everything from broccoli, cauliflower & blackberries to red peppers, fish & squash. So far, there is nothing he has refused (I hope that will continue as he gets older! ;)). Parker looks and acts like such a little man now. He is growing up way too fast for his mommy & daddy!

Some of his favorite things are trucks, bicycles, motorcycles, tractors, diggers & basically anything that will GO!!! I think it will be a fun Christmas! :) It all started with a My Small Board Book of Vehicles that the Nolen's bought for him when he was a little tot...this became one of his favorites a few months ago! Then we noticed that as we were driving anywhere, he would always point out the airplanes, motorcycles, construction trucks, etc. etc. etc. (Right now, there is a lot of construction going on around this area so that's convenient for us in a way! :))

Our little boy loves to explore new things outside... play in the grass & climb rocks! Parker loves to kick balls around too..soccer balls, bouncy balls, baseballs...whatever is within his reach! He likes to give mama & daddy lots of hugs & kisses. Parker has recently discovered piggy-back riding which he thinks is very fun! He likes to read books after a hard day of play & is also very good at putting his puzzles together. Parker also is always interested in just about whatever you are doing; he loves to watch mama vacuum, cook supper, pick up around the house (his favorite thing to do while I'm working on some of those things is to go in the laundry room, get the swiffer mop & pretend to mop..the kitchen & the carpet! :))

Each day is a brand new adventure for our small family & we are loving it!

The magazine holder by our bed holds my current reading material..whether the magazine/book is new or old, it's just whatever I'm grabbing that month when I just have a few free minutes. Here's what is currently filling it: An old Creating Keepsakes issue, Parenting, Southern Living, an old Mississippi edition, Scrapbooks, Etc., Life: Beautiful, & The Power of a Praying Parent by Stormie Omartian (thanks Aunt Val!).
Usually, it's more of a mixture of books & magazines, but right now only one book graces the rack! :)

thoughts over the weekend

I have so many things I can/want/need to do, but for some reason I'm deciding to blog instead! Parker is napping, so why not? This weekend was interesting..sooo nice to be with at home with Clay & Parker & have some fun events planned but it seemed like in between all the exciting times, negative things were thrown in my face! Ever have days or weeks like that?

Yesterday, I was so ready to start today! This morning was such a blessing though! Parker slept till 6:50am & was such a cutie! We snuggled & cuddled for a bit, laundry was started by 7:10, good breakfast, dishes put away, dressed & ready to hit the gym by 8:45.

This weekend, I was really upset about not having a camera & the news that Ritz Camera hit me with was an even bigger bummer-- as of this year, camera companies are no longer making the classic point-and-shoot cameras that will take pics of anything. Each small camera will have specific purposes & features; for example, you will not be able to take pics of the beach with the same camera that you take a group picture of. Landscape, portraits, action shots, etc. will all require a different camera. Smart marketing on their part..not good for everyone else in the world who wants a camera. Now the average household will have 6 cameras (according to the "photography polls") &/or an SLR...the type camera I've been dreaming about for some time now. Ritz Camera has already phased out the "classic" point & shoots so Clay said we would go look at Best Buy when he gets back from his trip. So....word to the wise...if you currently don't like your camera or don't have one, buy a point & shoot NOW before the warehouses are empty; otherwise, you can plan on buying 3-4 in 2010. The SLR camera that I have been looking at for some time has been phased out & a new one will stock the shelves by the end of this month. In other words, the price of the SLR has just gone up (the one I would now get is more expensive than the one that is being discontinued)...not good for me in getting one of those right now.

After having a slight pity party for myself, I decided it was pathetic to mope around & that it was time to be thankful for the wonderful blessings & things that I do have. Here is just a small list of what I thanked God for as I fell asleep last night:

Good food & the ability to cook & try new recipes
my health & my family's health
the photographs & albums I do have of my family & friends
good memories
being able to stay at home with Parker right now

the forgiveness & love that God shows us each & every day (even when we fail or choose to pity ourselves for no important reasons! :))
...and then of course, because of the mood I was in I went into more specific things such as "my special chocolate" & my vintage children's books.. :) I won't list out everything...I think this entry is long enough!

Thanks for letting me share my feelings...hope this didn't get too long or boring! I am now off to get some stuff done before the little man wakes up! :)

have you seen this before?

Look familiar to some of you out there?! On Sunday, Parker sported one of his daddy's childhood outfits to church & I must say it was adorable! His spunky little nature made the morning & moments even more perfect!

I wish I had a scanner so I could put Clay & Parker's pictures side by side...there is definitely more than a slight resemblance of the two! It only took about 7 attempts with daddy's iphone to get Parker to stand still for 2.2 seconds for this photo! I am soooo thankful we captured it!

A Weekend Update

An update on our life...

Yesterday, Clay, Parker & I enjoyed a nice morning outing at Como Zoo. We met up with Michelle & Bella & their friends, Carol & her daughter Sophie. Last time we went to Como Zoo we did everything but the rides. Yesterday, all we did was let the kids play on the kiddie rides. Sooo much fun to watch their expressions as they hopped from ride to ride! They rode Alladin, the race cars, the horse ride, the train and a couple of others. These rides were specifically designed for older infants & toddlers so parents weren't even allowed to ride them with their children. It was Parker's first time to ride a ride by himself! I was so proud....I didn't even cry! ha ha!

He was sooo cute in the cars...that & the train were his two favorites! You could fit 4 in each car & there was a steering wheel at each place. The cars went round & around in circles like a merry-go-round. The train was this adorable little ride on tracks that looped all around a scenic area of the park. It was a "relaxing-sit-back-and-enjoy-the-breeze" type ride...and that is just what Parker did! I wish I could have captured his sweet expression as he was going around & around so happily & content on the rides! If you had seen it, I can promise you that you would have thought, "Awww, let me just hold you & eat your sweet little self up!" :) It was really special for Clay & me to see! Ok, I had to have my mommy moment..on to a new subject!

Afterwards, we went home for lunch & then left to do some shopping for Parker at the mall (he had no long pants for this fall...my friends & family from the South will be horrified! But don't worry...if the weather had turned cold on us we would have had plenty of blankets to keep warm until shopping time! Clay & Rassie, do you remember last May?) :)

There were some amazing Labor Day Weekend deals out there! My favorite deal of the day was his Old Navy jeans: regular price $16.50 Sale price $11 plus a 10% coupon!!! Total price: $9.90

I think Parker's favorite part of the mall was the kid's area outside of Old Navy where they had the coolest cars set up for kids to play in, on & around! Looking at them, they resemble a hard coated plastic of some sort, but when you feel the cars, they are somewhat soft. I think they are made out of some kind of styrofoam with some type of thick plastic shrinkwrap on top. Clay was so impressed with them I think if there had been any sort of advertisements for the products, he would have gone off & bought one right away!

We met some friends for dinner & the kids had a BLAST here!

Today, we have an eventful day planned as a family...gym, birthday party, grocery, & a few other random things! My back-up camera (Clay's old one), the one I have been using since my camera was stolen in Mexico, went kerplunk on me Thursday. (not a good kerplunk!) Until Clay talked to Michelle to make sure I hadn't purposefully broken the camera, I think he wondered if I had done something to it just so I could get a new camera (based on this summer's luck with cameras!) :) I PROMISE I didn't! Clay & I have been fooling with it since then to see if we can salvage it but it's not looking so good. If you don't see quite as many pics up here over the next several days it's because I'm camera-less!!! (hence the lack of pictures on this post! ) Good for everyone else in the world who is tired of seeing me behind a camera...NOT GOOD for me!!! We'll figure out something soon though...

I hope that everyone has a relaxing & fun weekend! :) It's gorgeous here, so we'll be spending as much time outside as possible!

...random note: clay is eating his lunch & just got really excited because "Hellfighters" with John Wayne is on...one of his favorite childhood movies. We learn new things every day about our loved ones don't we?! (he is still telling me a story about this movie as I type this!) :)

MN State Fair 2009

Today, Parker & I met Michelle & Bella at the Minnesota State Fair for a good morning of fun! This was Parker's first year to go so I was excited to view his reaction to everything!

We started out by landing a GREAT, FREE parking spot (even though when we arrived we had no idea where we were going or where to park!) Michelle & I passed the main entrance to the fair & turned at the crossway of Snelling & Como. After driving down a little ways past some homes we parked out on the street & walked back towards the fair. It was a gorgeous day out so the 1/4 - 1/2 mile walk was nice!

I would suggest if you park out that way taking the back entrance (which is the first entrance you come to as you're walking to the fair). It was soooo less crowded than the main entrance & there is a very nice bathroom right as you walk in to the left that is perfect for changing diapers & such! You are also right there by the Livestock Barns & animal exhibits! This was the first thing that we took the kids to...Parker & Bella were able to see cows, horses, pigs, & sheep. They didn't pet them this year so I didn't take a lot of pictures of us with the animals! :) Maybe next year! We did spend a large majority of our morning seeing all the animals though!

We actually didn't take the kids on any rides...they were happy wandering around the fair & observing all the sights & people! Actually...

When we pulled up in front of the Bobcat exhibit, I thought Parker wanted to get out because of all the bright colored fairground rides he saw across the street. I should have known...

This is where Parker & Bella spent the next half hour... "forget the rides, just let me drive one of these things!"


One of the highlights of the day was getting to try Sweet Martha's cookies that are infamous in MN. I have been hearing about these delicious treats ever since we moved here our first year! And now I can say, I know why they are famous! We purchased a heaping cone filled with the yummy cookies, & I can't say that many made it home! I was good though, I saved several for hubby! He was so proud...he knows that when it comes to anything with chocolate, I'm weak! :)

What goes perfect with chocolate chip cookies? Some good cold milk!! Loved this deal: "All you can drink milk for $1" You just had to save your cup & then could have it refilled as many times as needed. Parker & I inhaled our cups...it was the best tasting milk I ever remember having -- cold, sweet & creamy. Ummm...so good!

The kids were both worn out when we left so naps were in order as soon as we made it home this afternoon. I'm so glad we ended up going this year! It was the perfect weather for a day out at the fair!

Thought I would share another cute layout from the weekend! I LOVED creating this one because of the colors...the black & turquoise together really make the pictures stand out!

As I was going through some of our pictures one day while Parker was napping, I came across these shown below. This precious elephant outfit from Puddleducks in Grenada was one of my favorites that he wore during his first year! It brings back so many memories just thinking of Parker wearing it! I was sad when he outgrew it!! (but then I can always hope that we'll have a couple of more boys who can get a few months wear out of it as well!) :) I have several more "favorite outfits" that I would like to feature in future layouts...outfits worn many, many times that bring back fun memories of Parker and of us together as a family!

Do you recall a certain outfit that brings back memories from your childhood...I might have to call mom & ask her about a few of mine! She always gets a smile on her face when she comes across pictures or the actual baby clothes that Taylor & I wore when we were little...a story always follows!

The cool thing about capturing pictures & memories of special outfits in an album are not the outfits themselves, but the stories behind them! I can think of quite of few with this precious ensemble Parker wore for about 4 months of the first year of his life!
